Our First Efforts
Back in late May 2012 I decided that I will join with Kasozi Moses a young youth minister serving the teens at Kitovu, Masaka. During conversations I enquired as to how I could help. We chatted about poverty, unemployment and how many children live in one parent families that are poor. We decided to help 1 woman each month and to help set her up in a business that will provide her and her children a sustainable income source. The help will be a two-fold process. Firstly the woman will be educated with trade and financial literacy skills and secondly provided with the initial start up costs. It is hoped that after an initial phase the women will be able to provide for their children (nutrition, education and health) and will in time empower and assist another woman with a sustainable income source (that is all that we ask from them in return).
Update Fri 5th Oct, 2012

June 2012 - Nakaweesa Edisa
Nakaweesa Edisa lives with her three children, a daughter 14, a son 11 and a son 6 in extreme poverty. She lost her husband three years ago but manages to send her children to school.
She was sponsored by her community to attend a skills training course in tailoring. Nakaweesa Edisa would like to be able to earn a profit of UGX 4 000 ($1.50) which will provide food and basic needs for her family.
What we could do…..
We were able to purchase this sewing machine for her as well as provide a start-up kit of cotton, scissors, materials on June 4th.
Reports:
14/06/12 - Ms Nakaweesa Edisa is now able to prepare three meals a day for her family. It has been a hard start to her business, but she is able to earn UGX 3 000 ($1.15) a day and she hopes that by the end of the month she can earn UGX 4 000 ($1.50). She was so grateful for the support.
03/07/12 - EXCITING NEWS… From money that Ms Nakaweesi Edisa has been saving, since she received the sewing machine, she has sponsored a young woman to study hairdressing so that she can also get skills for life. It is wonderful that Nakaweesi Edisa is now bearing fruits.
